HISTORY: Al is the youngest child of Trisha and Hohenhiem Elric, but his entire life he has never known a father. However his older brother Edward always looked out for him, and it was enough to have his mother and big brother. They were happy- Al was so happy, until the ones he loved started to fall apart before his eyes. First Edward lost his arm in a car accident, saving Al from being hit by the car by pushing him out of the way, only for Ed to be hit instead. And then Trisha fell fatally ill. There was nothing that could be done for her, no matter how Al prayed, and she eventually died, leaving Al with Ed. After their mother's death, Al with his brother were taken in by a close friend of the family.

Ever since his brother's accident and his mother's illness, Alphonse decided that he wanted to become a doctor when he grows up and almost obsessively dove into his studies. At fifteen, he studies more than is normal for a boy his age, but he is determined to spend his life helping others, in return for all that his mother and brother have given for him.

PERSONALITY:Alphonse, unlike his brother Edward, is calm, passive. He greets life's hardships with a smile- or at least tries to. As a child he was happy and carefree, easily entertained, easily pleased. And with two people who loved and doted on him, it was easy for Al to have such a happy childhood. But then life showed Al the hard way that it's not all sunshine and daisies. When Edward saved his life by pushing him out of the car's path and lost his arm as a result, he started to wonder if he was a burden to Trisha and Ed. And when Trisha died and Al became Ed's responsibility, he inwardly felt guilt for forcing Edward to take care of him. Secretly Al looks forward to the day when he's independant of Ed- not because he doesn't want Ed to take care of him, but because he's afraid that Edward is tired of him.

Academically Edward is the better student- everything seems to come so much easier to him than to Al, so Al tries twice as hard to be as smart as Edward. He looks up to Edward, admires his intelligence and how it all seems to come naturally to him. Not that he envies Edward this gift- it just means that Al has to prove his worth, to be as good as Ed. And because Al cares more about that, he gets very high marks in class, just like his brother. Things don't come quite as quickly, but Alphonse is a bright young man with a lot of determination. It's what makes him like Edward, makes him an Elric- when Al focuses on something, he stubbornly sticks to it. On occasion this has caused the brothers' to fight, but because it pains Al too much to anger Ed, he usually concedes and let's Edward win (even if he's wrong.)

Al is religious. Trisha taught both him and Edward the Bible, about God, and Jesus, and Heaven. When she fell ill, Al had prayed for her every night, begged God to let her get better, but as she grew increasingly worse, his faith faltered. It was around this time that Edward declared himself athiest and forced Al to promise him he wouldn't pray to God, that there was no God who could help Trisha. Al, who respected Edward in so many ways, disobeyed him and continued to pray throughout that time, not only for Trisha's life, but for Edward's soul as well. Like a secret, like some forbidden fruit he keeps his faith hidden from Edward, not knowing what his brother would say if he found out that Al still worshipped God.
